Uganda has marked its 64th Independence Day with a low-key ceremony held at State House Entebbe on October 9, 2026, as the Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, prayed for peace, love and prosperity for the country.
The celebrations, convened by President Yoweri Museveni, were held under the theme “Embracing Our Sovereignty with Hope and Visionary Leadership.”
Leading the opening prayer at the ceremony, Archbishop Ssemogerere prayed for all Ugandans to enjoy peace and freedom as blessings granted by God. He also commended the country’s leadership to God, praying for wisdom, courage and understanding as they continue to lead the nation.
Meanwhile, President Museveni was among 20 medalists recognised during the national celebrations, according to the Presidential Awards Committee in the Office of the President. The President received the Order of the Commander-in-Chief (Uganda Prisons Service Medal) in recognition of his leadership and contribution to peace and security.
Major General Richard Karemire, the UPDF Joint Staff for Formal Education, Sports and Culture (JS FESC), who also serves as Master of Ceremonies for the Awards Committee, announced the names of the distinguished award recipients.
While announcing the recognition, Maj. Gen. Karemire highlighted President Museveni’s role and contribution to the development of the Uganda Prisons Service.
